What is community?

Community is often simply defined as a group of individuals living in a specific area. For me, the word community encompasses much more than a group of individuals just going about their daily lives in a given area. Community is about individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs coming together to create a cultural environment of mutual respect, compassion and commitment to individuals and families.

Community by Community was created believing that families with strong values and commitments are necessary in creating communities where respect and compassion is evident. We believe that all individuals play an important role in strengthening and supporting their communities.

Community By Community is a non-for-profit organization that is on the front lines of serving, mentoring, and equipping people all over Staten Island.  The passion and heart that is exemplified in the team under the direction of founder, Cecilia Dorta, is contagious.  Through the building of partnerships, Community By Community is intentionally reaching out to others and giving assistance to those in need in very practical ways that encourage people to reach their potential.  Rather than simply giving hand-outs that are consumed in a short period of time, this organization is making investments in the lives of people – building relationships that will have a positive impact for life.  Community By Community is all about giving back to the community.  It’s about bettering the lives of people so that they, in turn, will be positive contributors who give back to their communities.

MLK Step Up/Speak Out Youth Summit

Community by Community participated in the 2nd Annual MLK Step Up/Speak Out Youth Summit that was held at The College of Staten Island. The event was held in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream for young people. The summit workshops and special presentations targeted youth from ages 10-19 years of age.
